“In the afternoon and evenings, the large-format, floor-to-ceiling porcelain tile in the primary bathroom is awash in natural sunlight,” architect Brian Parnagian notes. “A low, corner window is situated flush to the top of the tub surround, deliberately located to capture discreet views of the treetops in the rear yard while someone is seated in the soaking tub. Operable awning windows can be opened to allow fresh air and the sounds of crashing waves and seagulls in from the outside.”

“In this bathroom, we went for the drama of the black and gold,” designer Cindy Dzurita says. Though the space is not large, the deep tone doesn’t overwhelm it thanks to the vertical dimensions. “It has a very high ceiling — 10 feet —   so we were able to do that.”

Used for bathing kids and for guests, this reconfigured full bathroom is as stylish as it is functional with a custom aqua vanity accented with oversized half-moon handles in black and tiles with soft gray and cream veining. Washable sheer drapery — hung floor-to-ceiling — covers the bathtub/shower combo when not in use.

For the bathroom’s driftwood-inspired vanity and shelf, interior designer Suzette Donleavy credits Eric Seebald of Seebald Construction LLC. “Eric did a beautiful job creating a vanity that honors the natural shape of the wood,” she says. A vessel sink, wall-mounted faucet, shiplap, penny tile and the homeowners’ collection of nautical art (not shown) contribute to the classic shore vibe.

“The clients wanted a modern, simple white-and-gray bathroom” with a soaking tub, spacious shower and private toilet room, Draznin says. Widell and her husband have separate bathrooms. (“Mine’s smaller than his, but I got the bigger closet,” she says.) That meant Widell had free rein to outfit the space. “I played on the arches of the tile with the custom vanity I designed, which has arches and roundness.”

The shower’s arched door repeats the arches in the doorways elsewhere in the home and those found in the floor tile.

A new room encloses the toilet, which used to sit open to the rest of the space, and includes a vanity with a faceted glass vessel sink (not visible in photo) in this Franklin Lakes home. Frosted glass on the bottom half of the door provides privacy. “Because I kept my dark, traditional bedroom furniture, I wanted the bathroom to be clean and neutral, yet not too modern,” homeowner Christine Christopoul says. A towel warmer just outside the toilet room is conveniently close to the bathtub.
