This converted office space on the second floor, painted a pale shade of purple, is now a dedicated room where the kids can focus on homework or arts-and-crafts projects. Eliminating heavy and dated upper cabinets “allowed the room to breathe,” designer Meghan Meehan says. Now the girls can display their creations on open shelving or beneath the newly installed sconces. Lower cabinets were revitalized with a fresh coat of paint and new hardware.

This ground-level space in this Brant Beach vacation home opens to the waterfront. “We have a tradition of salvaging materials and fixtures from past assignments and reusing them in our next project to keep them as part of our history,” homeowner/architect Stacey Ruhle Kliesch says. The bar here is made from the hull of a daughter’s first Sunfish sailboat. The heavy timber structural beams from the original house were repurposed into the back bar. The murals were once a part of a restaurant that Stacey’s husband Gary, also an architect, remodeled. The room also features a concrete slab, flood vents, breakaway walls, cement fiberboard and corrugated metal. “The entire space can be power washed,” Stacey says.” It will be safe and usable even in the event of a flood.”

LIVING SPACE | “I think most people were surprised by how a 460-square-foot room could be transformed into a functional, elegant living space,” designer Michael Curren says. The secret: properly scaled and versatile design pieces. A television rotates along the modular wall, allowing it to be viewed between “rooms.” Plexiglas® panels provide privacy to the sleeping quarters without blocking the light. The loft won the Tulip Award, voted by visitors as their favorite interior space.

The kitchen was already installed before Curry came aboard, but she did take advantage of some unused space to create a dining area with a bench and a couple of chairs. “The light from a skylight and the windows makes this a wonderful space to enjoy a meal and read a paper,” she says. The joyously colorful painting is by New Jersey-based artist Nancy Ring.
