Ancient Greeks and Romans painted landscapes. So did the Chinese. So did the Dutch. In Western art, it came into its own again in the 17th century. Before that, it was considered the lowest genre of painting and used primarily as background for figural and historical paintings.
The landscape is the subject of the four artists in this exhibit: Barbara A. Friedman, Seth Ruggles Hiler, Lucy Kalian, and Carol Magnatta. Ms. Friedman’s paintings are lush, serene works where marshes meet water. Mr. Hiler’s paintings are replete with wild gestural brushwork and vibrant colors. Ms. Kalian’s work encompasses both vivid waves and quiet landscapes. Ms. Magnatta paints pastoral scenes.
Barbara A. Freidman received her BFA from Parsons School of Design, and her MFA at William Paterson University of New Jersey.
Seth Ruggles Hiler received his BFA from Syracuse University, and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art.
Carol Magnatta received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from Kean University Union, N.J.
Lucy Kalian studied art at RISD, the American College of Art and Design, and the Scottsdale Artist School.
The opening is March 8th, 2024 from 6 – 8 p.m. It’s a free event and everyone is invited.
