  • Deep tones in the window shade and a ceiling painted to coordinate with the floor tile add character to this otherwise neutral space.

Color and creativity combine in fund-raiser.

Sharon Sherman wanted to add a little pizazz to a space often associated with drudgery. While laundry is something “that most people relate to as a dreary chore,” she says, “I wanted to make it a place that was bright.” Presented with white cabinetry, gray walls and gray floor tile already in place, Sherman added a jazzy window treatment to bring a pop of color. She then had the ceiling faux painted in a design similar to the floor tile to create a subtle sense of vertical symmetry. Charming signage adds a bit of humor to washday because, Sherman says, “I thought of the laundry room as more whimsical.”

The Designer Showhouse of New Jersey was in a Saddle River home built by Joseph DiStaulo Homes. The event benefited Hackensack University Medical Center (hackensackumc.org).
