Kitchen Update
Writer Ren Miller | Photographer Greg Pallante | Designer Antonella RomanoThe homeowners first thought a new backsplash would add the modern panache they wanted for their kitchen. The shared their wishes with Antonella Romano of Stone & Tile Emporium and Antonella Romano Tile + Stone in Wyckoff, who started to draw plans for a new backsplash with fresh appeal.
The old backsplash featured an arched inset above the range with an oval tile design that included the encouraging words “Mangia a Bene, Vive Bene” (Italian for “Eat Well, Live Well”) surrounded by a basket-weave tile design that stretched the length of the wall.
Romano’s plans for the new backsplash featured a fresh geometric design using three types of marble — blue Celeste, Crema Marfil and white Thassos. The basket-weave tile on the rest of the wall would be replaced with a calmer complimentary tile.
When the homeowners saw the design for the new backsplash, they decided to expand the project, planning to freshen everything except the floor. The project grew to include new countertops, new paint for the cabinetry, removal of wallpaper and painting of walls, and new furniture for the adjacent living area, which is open to the kitchen.
“It was a true metamorphosis,” Romano says.
