“As much as the main spaces in the house flow,” interior designer Felicia Zwebner says, “ultimately, the dining room wants to be a place of repose where you stop. We created an anchoring element over the table, using the same beautiful wood that we used for the ribbon wall, but doing it in a much different way.” The art above the console is by late actor Anthony Quinn. The dining chairs were the clients’ own. Zwebner had them reupholstered to be more in line with the new design of the home. “I proposed a new fabric that would be more neutral and contemporary looking,” she says.

“The dining table is a design of ours,” William McIntosh says of the cast-concrete-topped piece, which features caster legs for ease of movement. “The chairs are Chandigarh chairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret for government buildings in Chandigarh, India, in the 1950s. They’re stained mahogany with woven cane seats and backs. The two closets and the door leading to the kitchen (with the round window) feature antiqued black hardware that adds a dressed-down feel that’s more country than city.

A little splashy and a tad formal, the dining room is accented by deep-hued floral wallpaper with brushes of gold and strokes of peacock blue, colors that complement the iconic painting of Steve McQueen and Jacqueline Bisset (He Loves Her Madly by Eric Oates) from the 1968 film Bullitt. Suvalsky replaced three side-by-side windows with one larger single pane of glass to heighten the view into the adjacent sunroom and beyond. A wall was also removed between the dining room and adjacent kitchen for better visual and spatial flow.

“My clients were looking for a very open floor plan,” architectural designer Richard Bubnowski says. “The kitchen and dining area are essentially one continuous open space.” Natural textures such as linen, sea grass, shell and rattan are juxtaposed with a lacquered beadboard ceiling, a glazed ceramic backsplash and bits of brass. Adds interior designer Christina Kim, “It’s the tension between modern and warm, rough and glossy, that makes things interesting, especially in a beach house.”

The dining room chairs feature easy-care vinyl on the seats and luxurious velvet on the backs. The starburst chandeliers are an eye-catching element. “We like to use two light fixtures over long tables,” says designer Karen Wolf. “It really balances the room.” Spectacular light fixtures add a bit of glitz against the natural tweed wall covering. “The juxtaposition of the natural textile with the sheen conveys an approachable luxe,” says Wolf. The dining table is finished with a catalyzed varnish that is, says the designer, indestructible.

The midcentury modern dining room set was passed down from a great aunt. The wife says, “The chairs were refinished and recovered in a gorgeous fabric. I love how we’ve given these heirlooms a fresh look.” The light fixture was at the request of the homeowner who “wanted a glamorous chandelier to set the mood for dinner parties,” explains Pilchik. Of the dining room wallpaper, Phillips notes, “We used Schumacher’s Pyne Hollyhock pattern, which was created in the 1960s and re-introduced in 2010. It is the epitome of a timeless classic.” The wife adds, “When the designers presented it, I couldn’t say yes fast enough.”

In the dining room, “we kept the window treatments a pale gold to work with the wall color,” Knauss says. Sheer bronze curtains on brass hardware complement the goldleaf on the ceiling. The furniture is traditional, but not overly so. The art in this room “is a little bit more edgy, so it’s a balance,” the homeowner says.

TABLE | Polo used benches at the table because “what I find very jarring in a dining room are all the legs. I wanted to pare that down so when you walked into the room, you got a sense of calm.” The chairs have silk upholstery; the benches have vinyl. “The people who pay the mortgage sit on silk, the kids sit on vinyl,” Polo says with a laugh. Lamps on the table make the setting more “intimate, like you’re in a private club.”

Dining Room | A lush, full-length table garland — embellished with mainly silver flowers and ribbon — brings the yuletide spirit to the holiday table. Silver is the primary metallic here, but hints of gold appear for a sense of consistency among rooms. Guests are always treated to a small gift such as homemade chocolates, personalized cuff links or a witty gag gift. “It all depends on the guest,” host Jackie Currie-Taylor says.

DINING ROOM | A black and white oil painting makes a statement in the dining room against a cream palette that includes asymmetrically hung macramé light fixtures. The midcentury table and chairs are teak, and the wallpaper resembles the bark of a tree to “speak” to the wood in the room.

The dining room has a coffered ceiling and, as Passacantando explains, “the coffer mirrors what’s below it, which is a long formal dining table. It works specifically for this arrangement of furniture.” Pin lights are set into the ceiling to provide mood lighting. The Italian-made custom table, a distressed walnut with intricate rosewood inlays, was hand rubbed, Scelfo says. The deep finish required two weeks of work. The arch at the left leads to the wine room and the one at right to the butler’s pantry. Walls have a strie/glaze faux finish in an olive brown tone.

A built-in buffet made of zebrawood maximizes storage and serving space in a dining room niche. Magazine photos collected by the homeowner inspired many of the room’s custom features: channel-tufted chairs and the square rift-sawn oak table with book-matched top and hand-chiseled edge. A mica wall covering adds a bit of shimmer to the ceiling along with a vintage glass rod chandelier. Wall accents, such as a framed Kuba textile and ceremonial mask, reflect the husband’s South African roots.

Ocean views informed the bevy of blues and textures in the breakfast area and throughout the home. The owner loves stripes, designer Alma Russo says of the fabric on the host chairs. All fabrics are stain-, fade- and mildew-resistant, including the seat pads on the wood and woven dining chairs. The Palecek chandelier is crafted of tiny coco beads that “read like seashells,” she says.
