This new foyer space, just off the new entryway, is also part of the addition. The three-paneled stained-glass window is new but fits the style and spirit of the cottage-like home. Owner Mark Polinski didn’t want a formal dining room, so this late-18th-century English library table can be used for dining. A window seat provides additional seating. A wrought iron chandelier crowns the table and is complemented by two wrought iron sconces flanking the window.

Dark-stained rift-sawn oak cabinets and contemporary hardware deliver the clean-lined feel the owners wanted in the remodeled kitchen. A glass, stone and steel mosaic backsplash creates contrast, and “playful Lucite seating and decorative lighting add personality to the space,” the designer says. The island’s dramatic waterfall top—in polished white quartzite—is juxtaposed by perimeter countertops in honed black granite with a leathered finish. Inset: Incorporating a desk for daily planning and Internet use was a priority for homeowner Nicole Dossin. “I spend a lot of time in the kitchen,” she says. A multifunctional bar—equipped with a beverage center, microwave, sink and plenty of storage—frees up needed space in the tight dining room around the corner. It also functions as a snack prep space for the kids away from the cooking zone.

Breakfast room | In the breakfast room, the designer chose the same kind of white leather chairs as he used in the dining room so the owners have additional seating when entertaining. The breakfast room also features a play of textures thanks to leather chairs, a glass and chrome table, and a polished chrome light fixture with small crystals around the perimeter. Acker designed a large round soffit above the table to conceal a misplaced junction box in the concrete ceiling.

“This was our first project where the primary living space was raised 10 feet above the ground,” homeowner/architect Gary Kliesch says. “Developing a relationship between the ground activities and the main living floor was important to us. We addressed this issue by creating a series of linked spaces for socializing — from the great room to the deck to the fire pit, outdoor dining, outdoor lounge, bar and patio.”

Flat-front cabinets have a modern edge, offset by the warmth of rift oak. The Apparatus “Trapeze” porcelain-and-brass fixture above the Saarinen dining table “is like a work of art” with its graphic silhouette, Gersten says. Island pendants are brushed silver; cabinet pulls are “handcrafted silver with a little brassy tone,” she says. “I like to mix metals so spaces don’t look like a showroom.”

A coffered ceiling with beadboard insets defines the kitchen and dining area, and half walls with columns mark the entrance to the living room.
