It works specifically for this arrangement of furniture.” Pin lights are set into the ceiling to provide mood lighting. The Italian-made custom table, a distressed walnut with intricate rosewood inlays, was hand rubbed, Scelfo says. The deep finish required two weeks of work. The arch at the left leads to the wine room and the one at right to the butler’s pantry. Walls have a strie/glaze faux finish in an olive brown tone.

A built-in buffet made of zebrawood maximizes storage and serving space in a dining room niche. Magazine photos collected by the homeowner inspired many of the room’s custom features: channel-tufted chairs and the square rift-sawn oak table with book-matched top and hand-chiseled edge. A mica wall covering adds a bit of shimmer to the ceiling along with a vintage glass rod chandelier. Wall accents, such as a framed Kuba textile and ceremonial mask, reflect the husband’s South African roots.

Ocean views informed the bevy of blues and textures in the breakfast area and throughout the home. The owner loves stripes, designer Alma Russo says of the fabric on the host chairs. All fabrics are stain-, fade- and mildew-resistant, including the seat pads on the wood and woven dining chairs. The Palecek chandelier is crafted of tiny coco beads that “read like seashells,” she says.

It also repeats the blue tone from the adjacent butler’s pantry. A geometric wallpaper pattern from Phillip Jeffries “is the perfect textural blend” of the room’s ecru and brown hues, she adds. In a large kitchen with limited wall space, “it could take the pattern without being overwhelming.”

Surrounding the table are chairs upholstered in a green, yellow and ivory pattern that repeats the living room and kitchen palettes. The table easily seats up to eight people at 46 by 72 inches and up to 14 people when the extensions are pulled out on both sides. On the terrace, Sferra added wall planters. It’s a lot less space than the patio with landscaped shrubs and gardens at her former residence, but she has enough space to sit outdoors with a book or enjoy a meal—and she doesn’t miss the maintenance. Sferra commissioned the three oil paintings of fruit from Elaine Kurie, whose style she describes as reflective of the realism of Vermeer.

The cocktail table rises and expands into a dining table when the owners invite guests for informal meals. Windows in the angled ceiling were removed and the other windows were replaced with UV-tinted versions to create a more comfortable atmosphere.
